Surgical extraction of third molars

The times when tooth extraction was associated with stress and unbearable pain are gone for ever. Nowadays, even the extraction of third molars, commonly known as wisdom or eighth teeth, is performed under perfect local anaesthetic. Local anaesthesia reduces unpleasant treatment sensations to the minimum and allows patients to function properly right after dressing the wound of an extracted tooth.
The indications for third molar extraction are the following:

     - significant decay of the third molar in cases when root canal treatment cannot be performed
     - inflammatory condition around the impacted third molar caused by its disturbed eruption
     - third molar impaction; if there is not enough space in the dental arch, which eliminates the chances for the tooth to erupt properly, the extraction is performed to prevent serious complications that may result from impaction, e.g. a dentigerous cyst
     - orthodontic reasons; in cases when the erupting third molar causes other teeth to shift and spoils the aesthetic in the maxillary or mandibular anterior region

Frequently Asked Questions:

- how long does the pain last after the extraction of the wisdom tooth? - in general, the pain lasts a few hours after the extraction. Your dentist usually prescribes pain killers so that the pain is not nagging and problematic.
- are antibiotics always administered after the extraction? - antibiotics are administered to patients only in cases of difficult extractions in order to prevent complications of post-extraction healing process.
- does smoking deteriorate wound healing process? - smoking can increase the risk of healing process complications. Thus, patients are highly recommended to avoid smoking for 24 hours after the extraction. In case of a painful and complicated healing process, patients should arrange an appointment with a doctor in order to re-dress the wound with appropriate medications. Re-dressing the wound is free in our dental practice.
